Critical Review of Life Is Strange

Life Is Strange: A Critical Review

Video games that provide an immersive experience usually contain the same primary components. Player choice is a key component because part of being immersed is feeling as though one has influenced the storyline. Another important aspect is realistic thematic elements; the better the dialogue, music, and character development, the more realistic the gaming experience feels. The game Life Is Strange immerses players using a unique game mechanic as well as the traditional components of immersion. Furthermore, the game also takes advantage of its immersive qualities to convey profound messages to the player. In this paper I will explain how Life Is Strange addresses relevant social issues using timeline manipulation to give the player insight into their own personal sense of morality.
Countless video games have been produced since their origin. Many games appeal to specific target audiences in order to increase their popularity and make them more competitive in their market. One could most likely find a game that they enjoy that suites their age, gender, and genre preference. With that in mind, it is also important to understand that not all games are created equally. If one desired to play a horse racing video game, they would find themselves faced with very limited options. Adversely, if one desired to play an action packed adventure game, they would have numerous options of varying quality to choose from. In order for a game to be popular and appeal to a wide audience spectrum it must have a unique competitive edge. Life is Strange stands out from others in its genre by pervasively addressing relevant social issues as a primary function of its gameplay. The player assumes control of the protagonist “Max Callfield” who is a student enrolled in a private high school for gifted art students. Throughout the game the player is exposed to a wide array of characters with whom they must interact with. Beyond the trials and tribulations of a high school student, the player is presented with relevant social issues to react to as well. For instance, a “straight-laced” student named Kate is consistently bullied by her peers from the very beginning of the game. Kate is being bullied because a scandalous video clip of her was put onto social media. This is a prime example of cyber bullying which unfortunately is a common occurrence in our society. In fact the Cyberbullying Research Center states that the percentage of middle school students who admitted to being bullied in this fashion has increased from 18.8 percent to 34.0 percent since 2007. The player chooses how Max reacts to the harassment she witness through the game. At a certain point in the story Kate is overwhelmed and decides to take her own life by jumping from the roof of the school. The player has a chance to talk Kate down away from the ledge; however, this is a difficult task. Regardless of the result of this encounter, the player will still have been presented with an extremely serious social issue that is a potential outcome of an instance of poorly addressed bullying. Making difficult decisions and being presented with dire circumstances is common amongst games in which the player has influence upon the end result of the story. Life is Strange gives the player the unique ability to change the choices made and potentially the overall outcome entirely.
Part of being human is undoubtedly making mistakes an attempt to learn from them. Many people wish there were a way to go back in time to prevent negative things from happening to them or to preemptively fix mistakes before they are made. Max possesses the supernatural ability to travel back in time to the recent past at will. This timeline manipulation game mechanic allows the player to see the outcome of their choices and then decide how they would rather have seen it turn out. Even in seemingly minor dialogues, the things that the player chooses for Max to say will affect her relationship with that character. Taking back hurtful words that were accidently uttered in an impossible ability in real life which is why time travel is so important in this instance. Some outcomes are always negative and the player will discover that it is wisest to occasionally accept things as they occur naturally. This causes the important realization that changing something in the past with good intentions would not guarantee a positive future outcome. In our daily lives it is important to understand there are things we cannot change and must simply accept. This inspires the notion that by being proactive in our relationships with others in the present we decrease the chances of having to be reactive in the future.
The answer to the question of “Why does this game’s message need to be conveyed?” is somewhat obvious yet does not lack complexity. By being mindful of the way our actions and words affect others we are more likely to avoid creating problems for ourselves in all aspects of social interaction. With the increase of interactions taking place on social media and as technology continues to advance, it can be difficult to teach the new generations the significance of their actions and the depth of their words. This game attempts to demonstrate the importance of observation and social awareness to potentially decrease the number of people who make destructive decisions such as drug use or suicide due to instances of bullying by their peers. Aside from providing an enthralling and exciting storyline, this game provides a plethora of experiences for players to learn from. With the popularity of video games being so high it seems apparent that the creators of the game saw an opportunity to convey an important message through a unique outlet. The complexity arises with the use of timeline manipulation. While providing the player with multiple possible outcomes to their choices, the game also provides players with varying examples of behavior. For younger players it is important to see examples of both positive and negative choices and how they may potentially affect the future. This can demonstrate different ways of handling situations and prove as practice for similar real life situations. The result of having a player make decisions that affect themselves and others is that they may tend to reflect on their choices in the game. If a player is surprised by a decision that was made, they may gain new insight into their own morality. Often times, people speculate how they would react to situations without ever having experiencing it. When presented with a hypothetical scenario people like to assume that they would do the morally right thing. This game provides the opportunity for players to be wrong about themselves. This can be very useful to someone who may be unaware of defects in their moral compass or character.  Bringing the moral shortcomings of the player to their attention meanwhile providing a learning experience on social interactions is why this game is important for people to play and be aware of. It is this unique immersive learning experience that Life Is Strange has brought to the world of gaming.

Time travel and character choice are not new elements to video games;however, the way Life Is Strange combines them is. Exposing players to situations they may or may not have experienced is a good way to inspire introspective thoughts. When players experience a real life connection to a video game they are more likely to internalize its message. This game gives players the opportunity to view themselves in a new way as they make moral choices and attempt to resolve conflict. This game serves as a learning experience for players without them having to take any actual risks. Life Is Strange uses timeline manipulation to prepare players to make careful decisions when presented with difficult social situations in their daily lives.

Surviving the first five days

Surviving the First Five Days
Day One: During day one you should only focus on exploration and very basic construction. In order to eventually build a shelter and complete advanced survival tactics, you will need to be aware of as much of the map as possible. Although the game creates a map automatically as you travel around the game, it is important to take mental and physical notes. Aside from simply learning what surrounds you, you will need to collect flint, seeds, twigs, and grass. Flint and seeds are easily accessible and can be found on the ground, twigs can be gathered from saplings, and cut grass can be harvested from grass locations. With the seeds to sustain your character’s hunger as you explore, the only thing restricting your exploration is darkness. Instead of impeding your progress by making a campfire and becoming stationary throughout the night, use torches to remain mobile. Torches require two twigs and two units of cut grass to craft and will burn for 75 seconds. By using torches and seeds to stay moving and fed, you will optimize your time spent exploring.
Day Two: This day will be a direct continuation of the previous one as far as continuing to explore the map. During your travels be sure to avoid obvious danger meanwhile making sure to have enough food and torch materials to explore throughout the night. It should be noted that if you happen to come across any premade craft items (i.e. Spear or shovel), it is a good idea to pick them up to save yourself some crafting time later on when that becomes the focus.
Day Three: This is the day of the prototype. By now you have probably mapped out a sizeable portion of the environment and know where several natural resource areas are. Take this day to craft all that you can carry. Your focus is slightly shifting to thriving from surviving. You will need to collect logs, rocks, and carrots in addition to the items you were previously collecting. Logs and rocks can be acquired by using the crafted axe and pick axe on trees and boulders respectively. Carrots can be plucked from the ground without the use of tools. Keep moving and exploring until the end of dusk. Just before nightfall you will need to build your first campfire using two logs and three units of cut grass. During this stationary night you will need to cook the carrots that you collected and eat them to refill your hunger meter up as high as possible. Also take this time to look through your crafting tabs and see what items you will be able to craft the soonest and what they require. Always plan ahead.
Day Four: The fourth day is the day to think about settling down. You will need to aggressively scout for a prime location to set up your first semi-permanent area. You will want to look for dark grey boulders, rabbit holes, beefalo herds, as well as roads. Close proximity to dark boulders, rabbit holes, and roads is necessary, while beefalo herds are bonus. Take this day seriously and scout out what you consider the best area. Don’t forget to maintain the upkeep of food and fire resources while collecting crafting materials as well. Once you have found a good location you will need to mine dark boulders for gold nuggets as well as rocks and you’ll need to craft some traps. Make sure to collect extra cut grass as it will become more and more important. Build a campfire at the end of dusk, and take care of any final necessary upkeep before the dawn of day five.

Day Five: This day shall mark the beginning of the end for your character. Day five is the day in which you will build your science machine. As you should have already collected the materials previously mentioned  to construct the machine, this will be the first action you take on this day. The science machine is a permanent structure so make sure you position it properly to allow for enough space surrounding it for other items. While near the science machine you will have access to many more crafting options. Utilize this day to prototype a few more complex crafting items and to look into the new items you will have available. It is important to create a fire pit, which will serve as a more permanent and useful campfire. The fire pit is rain resistant as well as multiuse. Before you go out to collect food and firewood, you need to set your traps. Drop the traps near rabbit holes and take note of where you place them. Make sure to return to your campsite before the end of dusk. Simply use a log on the fire pit to relight it. Make sure once again to keep an eye on your hunger and sanity meter.

Basic Controls and Screen Layout

Basic Controls and Screen Layout

PlayStation 4 Controller Layout: The image below details the button locations and functions for the control of the game.

The character is moved around the screen using the left analogue joystick. The left and right “shoulder” buttons denoted L1 and R1 are used to rotate the camera angle to better view the character as it moves behind or around obstacles. While the character travels around the environment, a map is automatically created by the game and can be viewed by either swiping or pressing the touch sensor pad. As the character travels around the environment they will need to interact with various aspects of the game. There will be an onscreen prompt to press the blue “X” button in order to complete the action. Note that for certain actions “X” will need to be pressed repeatedly. If there is an alternative action associated with an aspect of the game, the red “O” can be used to execute this function. This button can also cancel a previous action if pressed before the action is complete. Whenever items are collected by the character, they are placed in the inventory. The inventory can be viewed by used by pulling the right trigger button denoted as R2 and moving the right analogue stick to select an item. While an inventory item is highlighted, the player can select several interaction options using the directional buttons located on the left side of the controller. Pressing the top directional button will further inspect the highlighted item. Pressing left will have the character use the item for its function regarding the surrounding world. The right directional button will cause the character to use the item on them. The bottom directional button will cause the character to drop the item from the inventory onto the ground. If a weapon is selected from the inventory and is equipped by the character, it can be used to deal damage to an enemy by pressing the pink square button. The green triangle button can be pressed to inspect something before picking it up or interacting with it. The crafting menu can be accessed by pressing L2 and using the left stick to navigate it. The game may be paused at any time using the options button located next to the touch sensor pad.

Screen Layout and Explanation: The image below shows an example of the various icons that can be seen on the screen while playing the game.

On the left side of the side of the screen is the tool creation bar. The bar is broken down into multiple tabs that organize the tools by function. If the tab is colored green it means that there are items for which you have the material components to create. The Inventory can be seen along the bottom of the screen. The last three boxes to the right of are colored grey and are for equipped items. If an item in the inventory is colored green it is perishable, it will turn yellow and then red as it progresses towards expiring. At the top right of the screen one will find four circular icons that represent different key aspects of survival. The large circle with multicolored sections is the time of day tracker, as the clock hand passes into a new color the time of day will follow suite. Yellow represents day, red represents dusk, and the dark area represents night. The yellow icon depicting an anatomical stomach is the hunger meter. The orange icon depicting a brain is the sanity meter, and the red icon depicting a romantic heart represents your characters health or physical fitness.

Changes to the Game

Changes to the Game

A few things in Don’t Starve appeared to be lacking certain qualities that could potentially improve their effectiveness and importance. A few things that could be improved to add a level of complexity to the game are the diversity of resources and the complexity of crafting materials. The process of crafting in the game is straight forward and requires only a few basic objects to craft various tools and weapons. A proposed improvement would have there be more variety of resources to gather to further intensify the survival aspect of gathering. Currently there is only one resource per category for instance, flint and twigs for tools as well as logs and rocks for campfires. If the player had the options of making their tools from iron or copper, they would have to plan for survival more carefully. With multiple varieties of trees the player would have to decide which kinds are best suited for different applications. The player would have to choose to burn some kinds of wood while using other kinds for construction. The reward for gathering better or harder to find resources would also give players another sense of satisfaction from the game. Expanding on the idea of having a wider range of resources to utilize, comes the idea of more complex crafting materials. Theoretically, when players make the decision to mine for iron they would be presented with options to either smelt it into ingots or use it to process steel. By giving players more detailed and complex options, they are forced to do more problem solving and are encouraged to strategically plan ahead. This improved content would also add a level of difficulty to the game that could be potentially desired by some players.

Guide to Building A Science Machine

Guide to building a science machine

The science machine is a vital component in the crafting process. Without the use of the science machine, your character will not be able to craft many useful tools. In order to construct a science machine you will need to collect one gold nugget, four logs, and 4 rocks. The gold nugget and rocks can be acquired by mining dark grey boulders with the pick axe. The logs can be gathered by chopping down a hemlock tree with the axe. Once all of the components are gathered, the science machine can be crafted using the science tab of the crafting menu. When you first make your science machine, be sure to place it in an appropriate area that you have easy access to. Once crafted, the science machine will give the player the ability to craft higher tiered tools, thus increasing chances of survival.

Teachable Moments

Teachable Moments

Don’t Starve teaches us how to properly attempt the game of life in a survival format. It serves as a survival guide or a list of “do’s” and “don’ts” for our everyday lives. The message or idea that is trying to be conveyed is to respect nature and the natural order of the universe. In life we must decide what we aim to accomplish and what affects the accomplishment will have on our surroundings. This game helps to demonstrate the concept that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, for every choice a consequence. Furthermore, we must also decide what we aim to change for our benefit meanwhile being aware that it will change us in the process. In the game, the character needs to eat in order to continue living and moving towards the determined goals. One of those goals is to create a settlement, a place to feel more comfortable to aid in staving off the insanity from the wilderness. This can be seen in life as we constantly move towards our goals of becoming individuals and truly earning things to call our own. We strive for achievement and success so that we can be at peace with our surroundings and we hope to give ourselves better chances for future success. In order for us to continue to play the game of life and potentially be successful, we must find ways to combat the natural self-doubt and internal struggles associated with self-improvement and progression. Just as the main character seeks to escape his imprisonment and overcome a perilous realm, we seek to overcome similar adversities in our world. We often find ourselves directly under the control of others and seek some degree of freedom. While working towards that freedom we must implement different techniques in order to survive. Many times, survival causes us to do things that we wouldn’t normally choose to do. In the game an example of this can be seen in the act of eating raw meat or killing an animal. These actions translate to selling ourselves short and being impatient in our own survival in our world. By finding alternatives to killing animals in the game, the player learns alternatives to harming others to satisfy selfish personal desires. Don’t Starve teaches us to be aware of the inherently ruthless nature of life and how to find a useful middle ground between resisting and exploiting that nature.
