Changes to the Game

Changes to the Game

A few things in Don’t Starve appeared to be lacking certain qualities that could potentially improve their effectiveness and importance. A few things that could be improved to add a level of complexity to the game are the diversity of resources and the complexity of crafting materials. The process of crafting in the game is straight forward and requires only a few basic objects to craft various tools and weapons. A proposed improvement would have there be more variety of resources to gather to further intensify the survival aspect of gathering. Currently there is only one resource per category for instance, flint and twigs for tools as well as logs and rocks for campfires. If the player had the options of making their tools from iron or copper, they would have to plan for survival more carefully. With multiple varieties of trees the player would have to decide which kinds are best suited for different applications. The player would have to choose to burn some kinds of wood while using other kinds for construction. The reward for gathering better or harder to find resources would also give players another sense of satisfaction from the game. Expanding on the idea of having a wider range of resources to utilize, comes the idea of more complex crafting materials. Theoretically, when players make the decision to mine for iron they would be presented with options to either smelt it into ingots or use it to process steel. By giving players more detailed and complex options, they are forced to do more problem solving and are encouraged to strategically plan ahead. This improved content would also add a level of difficulty to the game that could be potentially desired by some players.
